It does not apply to me

Who wrote the following statement on February 12, 1779: “A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader”?

Samuel Adams wrote that.

What I find interesting is that the founding fathers all speak about liberties. The Constitution was designed to be interpreted via the intent of its makers. The founding fathers seemed to think that the greatest threat to America would not come from an external army or force, but from the peoples willingness to surrender their liberties. What is fascinating is that as a body, the nation does not feel that such ideas apply to them today.
